Literally, name of Taman Ayun Temple comes from word “Taman” means “Garden” and “Ayun” means ”Beautiful” so that it can be interpreted as a place with a beautiful garden.

Taman Ayun Temple is a royal heritage of Mengwi, which has an area of 4 hectares with iconic temple buildings, a beautiful garden, and a large pond surround. The most recommended place for those who want a place with ancient traditional style during holiday.

Its temple buildings in Taman Ayun have a main characteristic of the towering roof with 1 – 11 levels, which it is called as “Meru” by local people. Area of the temples seem like floating in a large pond.

History of Taman Ayun Temple

Mengwi Royal Family Temple

Taman Ayun was built by I Gusti Agung Putu Raja (King of Mengwi) between 1632– 1634. At first, the building was based because of nothing temple close to Mengwi.

As time went time by the temple had been renovated several times. The major renovation was done in 1937 for Kori Agung (magnificent gate), Gapura Bentar (split gate), and construction of Wantilan (Balinese Pavilion).

Pujawali Ceremony (anniversary day of the temple) is always held every 6 months (210 days) in Caka Calender, exactly on Selasa Kliwon Wuku Medangsia (20 days after Galungan Day). During the anniversary day, the local community decorate temple buildings and holds religious rituals.

Pelinggih Meru at Taman Ayun

As Other Balinese Temples, Taman Ayun also has the complex that is divided into 3 yards (concept of Tri Mandala), namely: Nista Mandala (Jaba), Madya Mandala (Jaba Tengah), and Utama Mandala (Jeroan).

  1. Jaba

Jaba is an outer yard (the southernmost area) as a resting place where there are a beautiful garden, Wantilan (Balinese pavilion), ticket locket, a small pond with fountain, Bale Bengong, and Siluh Resi Temple.

  1. Jaba Tengah

Jaba Tengah is a middle yard with Balinese traditional statues which symbolize as Dewata Nawa Sanga (nine guardian deities who are stationed in every wind direction according to belief of the Hindus people) and also some pavilions, namely: Bale Loji, Bale Gong, Bale Kulkul, and Perantenan (kitchen).

  1. Jeroan

Jeroan (main yard) has a shape of rectangular and stretches from north to south with stone walls on the sides and a large moat that surrounds the outside. There are some Pelinggih Meru (the multi-tiered roof shrines) and companion sacred building.

Need to note that Taman Ayun is holy area for Balinese Hindu People. Every visitor is expected to wear a sarong (Balinese fabric that wrap around waist to ankle) and a shawl, which both may be rented near the entrance.
